Our guest for this episode is visual artist Maura Walsh. In pre-pandemic time Maura was also an avid concert goer, racking up 53 concerts in 2019 and has been a strong supporter of our local music scene, attending shows at various venues around the city since her high school days.
In 2019 she created Our Tiny Guide to Chicago’s Best Music Culture Spots. It was an immediate hit within our local community. When the pandemic hit in 2020 she focused her endeavors on helping out the venues in Chicago by expanding upon the guide theme and creating illustrations of the various venue storefronts around the city. By selling prints, she raised $37,000 for local music venues battling the financial hardships from the pandemic. She’s currently working with nonprofit fundraising initiative Support Chicago Arts to launch Tiny Guide to Chicago Arts, which will help an even wider range of local performance spaces.
In this episode we talk through some of what drives those of us who see the ritual of experiencing live music as a lifestyle choice, hear Maura’s incredible story about using her talents to support her community over the course of the pandemic, learn a bit about her experiences as a visual artist in Chicago and what’s next for her.
