Presenting our First Friday new music list for May, 2021. This month we’re featuring a variety of different formats by Chicago musicians. If you like what you hear, please support them below with likes, shares and purchasing their music and merchandise.
Our First Friday round up posts are inspired by Bandcamp’s move to waive their processing fees on the first Friday of every month. for artists who use their platform. Here’s the backstory from Bandcamp:
On the first Friday of every month since March, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic. Over the course of these nine days, fans paid artists and labels $40 million dollars, helping cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and much more. If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who participated, thank you. Although vaccines are starting to roll out, it will likely be several months before live performance revenue starts to return. So we’re going to continue doing Bandcamp Fridays in 2021, on February 5th, March 5th, April 2nd, and May 7th. As always, isitbandcampfriday.com has the details. If you’ve started to feel guilty about buying music on any day other than Bandcamp Friday, here’s something to keep in mind: on Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money reaches the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day of the month (as 2.5 million of you have since March, buying an additional $145 million worth of music and merch) an average of 82% reaches the artist/label. Every day is a good day to directly support artists on Bandcamp!
Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana area alt rock band “Gentle Gene” is a 3 piece group comprised of bassist/vocalist Mark Vasquez, guitarist/producer Chris Gardner & drummer Phil Goodrich. The trio have been performing together in various groups including Rotten Records artist “Ideamen” as well as working together in other projects over the years.
Each member brings different experiences, influences and abilities to the band – Chris is a multi-instrumentalist and producer/engineer. Phil brings raw power and energy to the music with drumming influences like Dave Lombardo, Buddy Rich & Terry Bozzio. Mark’s mission with songwriting is to put everything about his life’s journey into catchy alt-rock songs. This is also Mark’s first project taking on multiple instruments and singing lead vocals.
Gentle Gene is in a weird hiatus of sorts, mostly due to the Coronavirus pandemic. They didn’t want their music to be released underfoot of COVID19, so the trio instead focused on finishing around over 20 or so songs throughout last year. They have decided however, to begin to release it now in 2021. Gentle Gene’s current goal is to release singles, so that each song can get a little of its own attention.
So far, they have released their first two songs. The 1st, called “The Night Rat” leans into Prog Rock territory and would appeal to anyone who is into that scene. The second song released, just a week or so ago, is called “Square’s Chorus”, a break-neck tempo – melodic punk influenced tune, that showcases Phil’s drumming and is a personal statement about love and insanity.
Gentle Gene is planning on releasing music one single at a time throughout the year, and hopefully will be able to make the collection available in some physical form after it’s mostly all out.

OUR SECOND ALBUM, “DIVINITY SCHOOL” NOW STREAMING EVERYWHERE.
It’s been over 18 months since our debut record, “13” hit the airwaves and algorithms. Our plan was to follow-up pretty quick with a second release, but we all know what happens when you make plans.
“Divinity School” was recorded at home, up in the attic, over the span over a personal house move, a pandemic, a quarantine, seismic social and civil unrest, and the general push & pull, warp & weft of adult life.
We leaned even more into pedals, plug-ins, and recording effects for this record. We even threw in some heavily edited vocal sampling (in small subtle doses).
The music still feels very much like “background” or “headphone” listening. It is instrumental. Cinematic. Centered in indie rock guitar (see below), and it is definitely for those who like their layers of guitar.
We compose because, for us, it is how we best communicate. The music is a much more direct and eloquent (relatively-speaking) way for us to express our internal landscapes and emotional weather patterns.
Into The Silo
Into The Silo brings the riffs and emotional state of early 90’s death and thrash to the modern hardcore era. Conceptualized during the pandemic, the group quickly entered the studio to record their debut “Rust and Decay.” Independently released at the end of 2020, it was well received by the metalcore, hardcore, death, and groove metal undergrounds. ITS is currently writing and demoing for a rapid-fire second effort, “The Reach,” set to be released independently in the second half of 2021. The group is conducting a promotional push, including livestream, podcast, and media appearance, and is courting festival dates for the fall of 2021.
The King of Mars
The King of Mars has evolved from a four-piece rock band into a larger group with synths, auxiliary percussion, and a horn section. Their sound shakes the foundation of traditional rock music by encompassing Jazz, Funk, and Soul musicality alongside insightful lyricism.
The new RAZORHOUSE Single has dropped!
For days we could smell the cooking fires from our pandemic bunker. It was night when we’d finished the last chia seed honey bar. We were forced to venture out of our safe hidey hole to investigate. As we climbed the fence separating us we could see shadows dancing around the fire. We heard a beat we recognized. We joined the dance of unbridled joy in resistance to a world of hate.
Razorhouse now invites you to join the Hobo Stomp.
Mark Panick – Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards, programming, production
Curtis Ruptash – Bass, production
David Suycott – Percussion, programming, production
Matthew Clark – back up vocals and remote engineering
Jeff Harris – guitar

Vicious Attack is an extreme metal band from Chicago Illinois. Combining elements of thrash and death metal, they’ve made a name for themselves throughout the Midwest with their ferocious live show. Vicious Attack have had the opportunity to share the stage with some of the biggest names in extreme metal: Exmortus, D.R.I., Havok, and many others.
Our band new album “Declaration of War” just dropped on April 10th.
OR construct heavy, complex, virtuosic instrumental jams framed tastefully within simple arrangements that are perfect for either ripping bongs with your buddies or reveling in with a nice glass of wine. The perfect mixture of volume and melody iced with a grittiness that only the city of big shoulders can produce.
Continuing their rapid pace of releases, Chicago rockers Indoorsmen bring you “Countertops / Connections” the singles off their next EP “Cleaning House, Pt. 2” set for release on June 11th, 2021. “Countertops” tells the story of a past romantic relationship and all the complicated emotions that come with reminiscing about it in the years since it’s ended. “Connections” focuses on addiction and the urgency of the next pick up when your source runs dry. While “Countertops” does get back to the heavier, punk sound the band has established during the outro, these two songs continue to show the dynamic range of the band. “Connections” has an upbeat, pop vibe – the guitar almost reminds you of “Party in the USA”. These singles show the band still exploring all parts of the rock genre, leaving no influence unused. It also hints that “Cleaning House, Pt. 2” will be exploring different themes and different sounds that Pt. 1.
We are a father/daughter garage rock duo that records and plays whenever they aren’t working. We are currently working on our debut album over this summer!
